Exploring Cuba: A Journey Through Transportation
Hop On, Hop Off: Varadero's Affordable Tour
Varadero Beach Tour and Panoramic BusTour offer a convenient and economical way to explore Varadero's Peninsula. For just US$5, enjoy unlimited access from 9:30 am to 9:00 pm. With 46 stops covering hotels, markets, marinas, and more, these open-top double-decker buses run every half hour.
Ideal for sightseeing: the buses allow you to hop on and off at your leisure from 9 am to 6 pm. Remember, sitting on the top deck's left side avoids tree branches. Explore attractions like the Beatles bar, House of Ron, and souvenir shops along Calle 62.
Budget-Friendly Option: This budget-friendly option beats taxis, especially for those staying further out. However, mornings may get crowded, and not all stops are clearly marked, like La Casa de Ron/Calle 62.
Reliable Transport: Despite minor inconveniences, these buses offer a reliable way to traverse Varadero. Just be cautious of branches if seated on the top deck's right side. And while evening buses may start at 7 pm, schedules can vary.
IMPORTANT: The sole payment method accepted on the bus is via credit card. Please note that credit cards issued by US banks are not accepted.

Car Rentals - Embrace the Freedom, or Perhaps Not?
For the adventurous souls, car rentals offer unparalleled freedom to explore Cuba's hidden gems. Navigate winding roads, savor the journey, and create memories at your own pace. With four main companies to choose from and the option for one-way rentals, you can tailor your road trip to suit your desires. You should carry an international driving permit and don't forget to download Google Maps for offline navigation—essential for navigating Cuba's roads, where signage can be scarce and GPS units are prohibited.
Important: Traffic accidents have led to arrest and detentions of Canadians in the past. Accidents resulting in death or injury are treated as crimes. The onus is on the driver to prove innocence. If you’re found to bear responsibility in a traffic accident resulting in serious injury or death, you may face up to 10 years in prison. If you’re involved in an accident, do not leave the scene, do not move your vehicle and call the police immidiatelly. While car insurance is mandatory for foreign drivers and foreign-registered vehicles, it's not for Cuban citizens. As a result, most local drivers don't carry a car insurance. You shouldn’t expect compensation for vehicle damage or personal injury from a Cuban driver following a car accident. Car insurance coverage in Cuba differs from that in Canada. Rental agencies are government-controlled. If you’re found to be at fault in an accident, the rental agency will nullify your coverage and seek compensation to cover the cost of repairs. Cuban authorities can prohibit you from leaving the country unless the rental agency receives payment or until all claims associated with an accident are settled.
Conclusion: Be cautious if you rent a vehicle in Cuba; Avoid renting a scooter; thieves target them and you may be responsible for the cost of its replacement; Make sure to obtain a receipt when returning a rental vehicle. All inclusive and currently with the fuel shortage, we don't recommend using car rentals in Cuba.
